Greener Gardening with Bloomin' Bentham - Spring / Summer 2013

Thanks to a successful bid to the Designated Community Rail Development Fund, (sponsored by the DfT, Network Rail and ACoRP), the Friends of Bentham Station and Bloomin' Bentham have been able to purchase and install a water butt and compost bin beside both platforms.

The bid also enabled the purchase of a further eight recycled half barrel planters.  There was a strong aroma of whiskey as the drainage holes were drilled in each planter.  The planters were made ready with new gravel, sand and compost, before planting.  All the elements for the project have been sourced and purchased locally.

The planting for 2013/14 has been sponsored by fifteen members of 'We Are Bentham', the local traders group.

The older already recycled half barrels have been recycled once more and moved to the Leeds end of the eastbound platform both sides of the Station Road bridge.  Along with the new platform markings (with a hint of the London Underground) the whole platform area has been opened up again for everyone to enjoy.

Six window boxes have been added to the westbound platform shelter.  They were designed, made and installed by local joiner Mike Barron.

A sample of the fantastic blooms to be seen and enjoyed at the station.
