FOBS Celebrates Second Anniversary - 13th September 2013

On Friday, 13th September 2013 the Friends of Bentham Station celebrated their second anniversary following a further year of voluntary work enhancing the facilities and environment at the station.  Invited guests included members of the Leeds-Lancaster-Morecambe Community Rail Partnership (LLMCRP), the Lancaster and Skipton Rail user Group (LASRUG) and Craven District Council, along with Benthamers who have supported the work of FOBS.

The festivities came in three parts.  Firstly, a celebration of the life and work of the late Pauline Hill, with the rededication of her memorial plaque and bench, following their repositioning at the station building, by Canon John Bearpark, President of LASRUG.  Many of you will recall Pauline's devotion to the station, her extensive youth work and genuine interest in all activities in the community.  Pauline was in fact the first Station Adopter for Bentham and for many years the Secretary of LASRUG.

Secondly, Simon Clarke, Community Rail Officer for the Bentham Line and meat pie aficionado, marked the completion of the 'Bloomin' Bentham - Greener Gardening Project', with the unveiling of two of the new water butts and a little ceremonial watering.  The project was made possible by a substantial grant award from the Designated Community Rail Development Fund which is administered by the Association of Community Rail Partnerships (ACoRP), Network Rail and the Department for Transport.  Simon is a frequent visitor to Bentham, to FOBS meetings, to LASRUG coffee mornings and the Oak Royd Bakery, and often comments on the good community spirit in town.

Finally, everyone enjoyed a buffet lunch, beautifully prepared by FOBS member Margaret Cowing, followed by a slice of anniversary cake.
